Our UK summer course tutors

Be inspired by our subject specialists, all experts in creating a collaborative, supportive and creative summer school setting in which girls thrive.

You will access 15 hours of classroom-based learning each week, filled with discussion, exploration and debate.

Throughout our academic program, illuminate tutors will invite you to consider different perspectives and new ideas, as you expand your intellectual independence.

Each tutor will also connect your classroom learning to exciting opportunities to extend knowledge on each of our educational and cultural visits.

Following a degree in Ancient and Modern History from the University of Oxford, and a PGCE from the University of Surrey, Hannah taught History & Politics in a number of independent day & boarding schools in the UK.

Having held a variety of leadership posts including Housemistress, Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Head, Hannah now leads the International Education and Partnership strategies for St Mary's School, Cambridge. Following her recent work on the school’s Sports Redevelopment Project, in partnership with Homerton College University of Cambridge, Hannah now leads on illuminate programme development and delivery.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress of St Mary’s School

Charlotte Avery is Headmistress of St Mary’s School, Cambridge, a leading UK independent day & boarding school for girls. An English graduate of the University of Oxford, Charlotte regularly contributes to the national debate about education - in the media, through seminars and as a keynote conference speaker.

Elected President of the Girls’ Schools Association in 2017, Charlotte has also forged a close relationship with the National Coalition of Girls' Schools. She has served on the Council of the Association of School and College Leaders and has recently been invited to join the National Leaders Council of the Federation for Education Development.

How many hours of classroom learning will I access?

You will access 15 hours of tutor-led classroom teaching each week (30 in total). Classroom learning is then extended through educational and cultural visits which are an integral part of our Cambridge UK summer school program. And, last but not least, there will be time to relax and explore the beautiful city of Cambridge.

What academic support will I receive?

You will work with our tutors in small seminar groups of up to 14, to ensure you can access high-quality support and individual academic attention.
